Uruguay is located north of the Rio de la Plata estuary and east of the river that gave the country its name. It was inhabited by nomadic tribes like the CharrĂșas. A Spanish expedition arrived in 1516 and over the next 300 years the territory was contested by Spain and Portugal. Uruguay became independent in 1828.
