Dietrich Wilhelm Landfermann (1800-1882) emphasized classical languages as a base for humanism in science and society, notably at the Landfermann-Gymnasium in Duisburg, which he headed during 1835-1841. The name was suggested by M. Hoffmann on the 200th anniversary of Landfermann's birth.
