With his friend Béla Bartók {see planet  (4132)}, Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly (1882–1967) collected melodies and rhythms from Hungarian folk songs into his own works. His highly expressionistic and demanding Sonata for Solo’ Cello (1915) was one of the first major works for unaccompanied’ cello since Bach’s {see planet  (1814)} Suites. (M 42671) _ _.
