Jewett Castello Gilson (1844-1926), Californian teacher, author and superintendent of schools, was determined to secure an astronomical observatory for the schools and people of Oakland. In 1883 he found a donor to fund what became the Chabot Observatory. The name was suggested by the Eastbay Astronomical Society.
