Georg Marcgraf (1610-1643), astronomer, mathematician and naturalist, made the first serious study of the southern sky during his stay in Dutch Brazil. He is also known for his zoological and cartographic work during the reign of Johan Maurits in Dutch Brazil. Marcgraf died in 1643 in Luanda (then Dutch Angola).
