Yanga R. Fernández (b. 1971) completed his thesis on the albedo and size distribution of cometary nuclei at the University of Maryland in 1999. Since then, at the University of Hawaii, he has measured albedos of other small bodies, recovered comets and discovered new jovian satellites. The name was suggested by M. F. A'Hearn.
