The great Anglo-Irish playwright Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) will always be remembered for this line “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars”, uttered by Lord Darlington and questioned by Mr. Dumby in the third act of Wilde's play Lady Windermere's Fan (1892).
