Torquato Tasso (1544-1595) was an Italian writer and poet known for his Gerusalemme liberata (1575), an epic poem on the first crusade that takes the battle between good and evil very seriously. His musical and lyrical style influenced later writers and musicians enormously, as in Liszt's symphonic poem Tasso.
