Anthony Chabot (1813-1888), one of the pioneering hydraulic engineers of the late ninteenth century and a developer of municipal water facilities, was the donor of the Oakland Chabot Observatory. He was a major contributor to public charities. The name was suggested by the Eastbay Astronomical Society.
