John Muir (1838-1914), a Scottish-born Californian pioneer explorer, glaciologist and conservationist, is acknowledged as the primary architect of the National Park concept used worldwide to protect and preserve wild places, and he was one of the founders of the worldwide conservation organization known as the Sierra Club.
