James Walter Christy (b. 1938), for many years on the staff of the U.S. Naval Observatory, is the discoverer of Charon, the largest satellite of (134340) Pluto. Just thirty years ago Jim spotted that which many others failed to notice and unlocked many doors in the study of the Pluto system.
