Johan Georg Gmelin (1709-1755) was a German naturalist who was appointed professor of chemistry and natural history at the University of St. Petersburg in 1731. From 1733 to 1743 he traveled through Siberia and his investigations were recorded in Flora Sibiria (1749-1750) and Reise durch Sibirien (1753).
