Hyacinthe de Ratte (1722-1805) was barely twenty years old when he was named general secretary of the French Royal Society of Sciences. On 1741 Aug. 10 he observed an aurora borealis in Montpellier. He observed the comet of 1757 and comet 1P/Halley in 1759, as well as the transit of Venus in 1761.
