Named in memory of Alfred Schmitt (1907–1973), astronomer at the Algiers and Strasbourg observatories and some time director of the Quito Observatory. He made numerous observations of minor planets at Algiers and Uccle and at Strasbourg was concerned with astrometric problems involving artificial Earth satellites. (M 4418) _ _.
