This planet is named in honor of the late Mr. G. Pels {1893–1966}, a life long member of the scientific staff of the Leiden Observatory. He observed minor planets at the Leiden Observatory and in addition he computed orbital elements for many of the minor planets found by van Gent. (M 2740) _ _.
