Named in honor of the late Prof. Marcel G. J. Minnaert {1893–1970}, who was Director of the Utrecht Observatory from 1937 until 1963. He made major contributions to solar research and prepared (with Mulders and Houtgast) the Photometric Atlas of the Solar Spectrum. He was an extraordinarily effective lecturer and writer in the popularization of astronomy. (M 3185) _ _.
