Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), born to a Scots-Irish family in Boston, Massachusetts, is known for his macabre and mysterious writings. The tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque (1839) enormously influenced artists from many disciplines. His famous poem The Raven is a reminiscence on the early death of his wife.
