Flemish painter Emile Claus (1849-1924) was well known for his landscapes, especially from and around the Lys river. Influenced by Claude Monet, he developed his own impressionism and is now considered the leader of the Belgian Luminism movement. Among his most famous paintings is De Ijsvogels (1891).
