German naturalist Johann Reinhold Forster (1729-1798) and his son Georg accompanied James Cook on the second Pacific Voyage. In Observations made during a Voyage around the World (1778), he described his investigations. In 1779 he became professor of natural history and mineralogy at the University of Halle.
