German physicist Gerd Binnig (b. 1947) received his doctorate from the Goethe University in his native city of Frankfurt am Main in 1978. Together with his colleague Heinrich Rohrer he was awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope.
