The city of Cluny is in the Saône-et-Loire department (Burgundy, France), 20 km north west of Mâcon. The town grew up around the Benedictine Cluny Abbey founded by Duke Guillaume I of Aquitaine in 910 C.E. It became the most extensive monastic establishment during the Middle Ages.
