Named to commemorate two important events in the history of the Kitt Peak National Observatory. Members of the Papago Tribal Council and the Schuk Toak District Council visited the Steward Observatory on the evening of 1955 Oct. 28, just one year after the discovery of this minor planet. This was the first step in arranging for the establishment of an astronomical observatory on Kitt Peak. The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) was incorporated on 1957 Oct. 28. (M 9079) Name proposed by F. K. Edmondson. _ _.
