Named in honor of James Cuffey, a member of the Indiana University faculty from 1946 to 1966 and then of the New Mexico State University faculty until 1976. He played a major role in arranging for the transfer of the 10-inch Cooke triplet from the Cincinnati Observatory to the Goethe Link Observatory in 1948 and thus the start of the Indiana minor-planet program.
