Named in honor of Sir Robert Wilson F.R.S., Perren Professor of Astronomy at University College London, and head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Wilson played a leading role in the development of the International Ultraviolet Explorer, one of the most successful astronomical satellites ever launched.
