Named in memory of Ignacio Domeyko (1802–1889), a Polish scientist who moved to Chile in 1830 as a teacher of chemistry and mineralogy in La Serena. In 1846 he became professor of mineralogy and later rector at the University of Chile in Santiago. In recognition of his extensive geological investigations throughout the country, the government offered him Chilean nationality. (M 11157) _ _.
