Named in honor of Shin-ichi Shimizu (1889– ), a pioneer in astrophotography among amateur astronomers in Japan, who in 1937, with only an 80-mm astrocamera, recovered periodic comet Daniel, which had been lost since its discovery apparition of 1909–1910. He also observed many comets and minor planets in response to requests from the Tokyo Observatory. (M 8801) _ _.
