Named in honor of Delphine Jehoulet Delsemme, wife of astronomer Armand Delsemme {see planet  (2954)} of the University of Toledo, Ohio. Before her marriage she contributed to astronomical research by investigating the behavior of the population II Cepheid RU Camelopardalis and as a co-recoverer of periodic comet Honda-Mrkos-Pajdušaková at its first predicted return.
