Named in honor of Michael J. Gaffey, planetary scientist at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His pioneering and comprehensive study of the spectra of meteorites has become the principal resource in interpreting minor planet spectra. More recently, he has demonstated that careful spectrophotometry can resolve geological units on minor planet surfaces. (M 12806) _ _.
