Named in memory of Leo Goldberg (1913–1987), one of the three incorporators of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy on 1957 Oct. 28, exactly three years after the discovery of this minor planet. Having begun work in solar physics as a student of Donald H. Menzel {see planet  (1967)}, he served as director of the University of Michigan’s observatory from 1946 to 1960, after which he moved to Harvard University and succeeded Menzel as director of the Harvard College Observatory in 1966. He became the third director of the Kitt Peak National Observatory in 1971 and retired in 1977. He was president of the American Astronomical Society during 1964–1966 and of the International Astronomical Union during 1973–1976. (M 19333) _ _.
