Named in honor of Stanton J. Peale, planetary astronomer at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Peale has made important contributions to the theory of tidal interactions between orbiting bodies and resulting capture into spin-orbit and orbit-orbit resonances, and to chaotic orbital and rotational motion. He is perhaps best known for predicting, almost literally on the eve of the Voyager 1 encounter with Jupiter, that its satellite Io would show extensive evidence of volcanism as a result of tidal heating by Jupiter.
