Named in honor of Alain Maury, photographic scientist working on the Palomar Sky Survey II at Mount Palomar Observatory. Well known as a discoverer of comets and Earth-approaching minor planets, Maury began his professional career in his native France at the CERGA {see planet  (2252)} Schmidt telescope. He joined the Palomar team in 1984. (M 13178) _ _.
