Originally a meteorologist, as first executive officer of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific and first editor of Mercury, Leon E. Salanave took steps to ensure that amateur astronomers felt a sense of “belonging” to an organization dominated by professionals. The name was suggested by W. J. Westbrooke.
