Named in memory of Juan Victoria (1906–1986), legal representative of the Yale-Columbia Southern Station when it was under construction in the early 1960s; he also supervised the construction of the dome and facilities for the U.S. Naval Observatory’s station nearby. A mining engineer by training, Victoria was known for his teaching and research in the engineering department of the Cuyo {see planet  (1917)} National University, and he also advised the government on the development and establishment of the Minerals Laboratory and the Mining Research Institute. One of Victoria’s greatest accomplishments was the construction of the San Juan {see planet  (2284)} Auditorium, considered to be one of best such buildings in Latin America. (M 31295) _ _.
