Named in honor of Claude Arpigny of the Université de Liége, to recognize his preeminence in high-resolution cometary spectroscopy. Arpigny’s fundamental studies of the excitation of molecular spectra in comets are unparalleled for care and detailed understanding. He has made significant contributions to our understanding of the emission by NH2, [O I] , CN and CH. He has also shown care and diligence by encouraging the work of others both in spectroscopy and other types of cometary studies, in his service to the community in preparing the forthcoming “Atlas of Cometary Spectra” and in various activities of IAU Commission 15.
