Named in honor of Malcolm Hartley, deputy astronomer in charge of the U.K. Schmidt telescope at Siding Spring, with which this minor planet was discovered. Among his own discoveries are the Amor object 1988 SM and ten comets, eight of which are of short period. (M 18464) _ _.
