Named for John T. Wasson, cosmochemist and professor at the University of California at Los Angeles. Wasson is the leading investigator of the chemistry of iron meteorites and developed the chemical classification scheme for irons now in general use. He has written extensively on the origin and evolution of meteorites, their asteroid parent bodies and the solar nebula. With his student and colleague Frank T. Kyte, Wasson has also contributed important observations and insights on the geochemical signature left in the stratigraphic record by the impact of large extraterrestrial bodies on the earth.
