Seaborg participated in the discovery of most of the known transuranian elements, including plutonium, and led the chemical effort to isolate and characterize that element and produce it in large quantities from nuclear reactors. He served as professor and chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley and as a member and chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.
