Named for the chronicles of Japan from the earliest times to 697, written in Chinese and completed in 720. It was the first historical record compiled by the Japanese government and contained records of various astronomical phenomena, such as appearances of seven comets (including the 684 return of P/Halley), 13 solar eclipses (e.g. in 628), occultations of stars and planetary phenomena.
