Named in honor of Fredrick H. Shair, manager of the Educational Affairs Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and former dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at California State University, Long Beach, and professor at the California Institute of Technology. While at CALTECH, he established the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) {see planet  (5181)} Program, which integrates students’ classroom experience with a research environment. Shair has been honored with numerous awards for his teaching excellence. The discoverer has been a SURF sponsor since the early years of the program. (M 23541) _ _.
