Named in memory of the Montgolfier brothers, Jacques Etienne (1745–1799) and Joseph Michal (1740–1810), who engineered the first manned free flight in a hot-air balloon, sailing nine km over Paris in 25 minutes on 1783 Nov. 25. Their father owned and they helped manage a paper-manufacturing business. While burning some waste paper they noticed how a paper bag was sent aloft by the hot air. (M 26930) _ _.
