German physicist and astronomer Johann Friedrich Benzenberg (1777-1846) organized a school for surveyors and made an early demonstration of the rotation of the earth. He wrote a Handbuch der angewandten Geometrie (1815) and established the Bilk Observatory at Düsseldorf.
