Pavel L'vovich Shilling (1786-1837) was an outstanding Russian inventor and orientalist. In 1832 he became the first to invent an electromagnetic telegraph suitable for practical use. He investigated the history and languages of Asian peoples and gathered a large collection of oriental manuscripts.
