John James Audubon (1785-1851) was the pre-eminent wildlife artist in the U.S. for half a century. His seminal Birds of America, a collection of 435 life-size prints, is still a standard against which bird artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries are judged. The National Audubon Society bears his name.
