Named for the Italian composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710–1736). He was a conductor in Naples and Rome and died in Pozzuoli in extreme poverty. He did not live to see the glory of his intermezzo La serva pedrona, which especially in France became the beginning of opera buffa. Pergolesi’s Stabat mater for soprano, alto, string instruments and organ shows his ability to combine large choral and instrumental components. (M 30802) _ _.
