Named in honor of Alfred McEwen for his significant contributions to planetary geology in the fields of photogeology, photometry, spectroscopy, photoclinometry, instrument calibration and mission planning. His research has involved diverse topics concerning the earth, the moon, Mars, minor planets, Galilean satellites and outer planets.
