Air Force test pilot Michael Adams (1930-1967) was the twelfth pilot to fly the X-15 and made seven flights. On 1967 Nov. 15, he was killed when his X-15 broke up during reentry. The first American to die in the course of a spaceflight, Adams was awarded posthumous Air Force astronaut wings.
