Named after Hans Holbein Sr. (c. 1465–1524) and Hans Holbein Jr. (c.1497–1543), German painters. Holbein Sr. created mostly religious paintings in the transition style from Gothic to Renaissance. Holbein Jr. is more famous, working in Basel, Switzerland and England. He became court painter to king Henry VIII and made well-known portraits of the English aristocracy and other famous people of the time. (M 34345) _ _.
