Named in memory of Alessandro Volta (1745–1827), physicist at the University of Pavia. His discovery of the significance of separating silver-zinc disk pairs with disks of moist cardbord was the key to his invention of the battery, just 200 years ago. Volta also made important contributions to meteorology and the study of gases, notably with his discovery of methane. (M 34627; M 34673) _ _.
