Named in honor of Takashi Tsuji (1937– ), Japanese astronomer working mainly on stellar atmospheres and spectroscopy. His major interest extends from cool luminous stars such as red giants, supergiants and carbon stars to very low luminous objects, including brown dwarfs. He received the academy prize of the Japan Academy in 1984 for “Theoretical studies of the outer layers of cool stars”. He served as the director of the Institute of Astronomy, Faculty of Science, University of Tokyo, during 1992–1996. He has been professor emeritus of the University of Tokyo since 1998.
