Ryojiro Akiba (b. 1930), professor of astronautics and former director-general of the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, is a pioneer in the Japanese space program. His achievements include the first Japanese satellite, Ohsumi, and the interplanetary probes Suisei and Sakigake that went to Comet 1P/Halley.
